Back to Fenchurch Street and the Lloyd’s Registry of Shipping on another day of blue skies and low temperatures. This time I took my Lumix G1.
The whole building is decorated. Above the entrances and windows, carved reliefs show unlikely clad men and women worshipping at the shrine of shipping. At least, that’s how it looks to me.
They hold plans and models of boats.
And in niches, there are statues of women reverentially holding more model boats.
A boy casually rides a dolphin.
At first sight, I thought this maiden supporting a corbel might be pregnant.
But her nearby male companion, who seems to have a headache, is similarly pot-bellied.
This rather fierce fish looks like it means serious business with the trident.
And the whole is topped by the glorious weather vane.
I particularly admire that weathervane….it’s splendid!

Super photographs here Isobel, and a lovely narrative too.
Now I have put them up, I can see where a little editing would have been a good idea. No time at the moment though, so they will probably stay as they are.
Lovely and I’m really starting to like weathervanes, must look out for some!
There might be a name for the science of or study of weather wanes. Someone will know. 🙂
Loving your post Isobel. The pictures are a treat to see and your words, your writing is a gift. I love reading your whimsical self 🙂
If you click on the first pix, you can see there is an amazing amount of careful detail in those friezes. I may have to go back again…
