Other Lives

The Guardian newspaper has a section called Other Lives to which friends and families of the not famous can contribute obituaries of their deceased loved ones. Every life is extraordinary. Every contribution to Other Lives underlines the power individuals have to effect change through their actions. That’s what makes it hopeful and inspiring reading.

Achievements are not the monopoly of the famous. If you’ve read Voltaire’s Candide, you’ll know that it ends with the words il faut cultiver notre jardin, which can be read as an injunction to us to do what we can with our own possibilities, creating what we can in our own lives.
Today, Mother ‘s obituary features in Other Lives. I hope she’d be proud. I think she would be. She was a keen gardener, and from a tough start, she certainly contributed to make this a better place.
I am certainly proud of her.

    • I do too. I don’t know of another paper that does this. You have to submit within three months and there is a word limit of 400. I only sent it in about ten days ago, just before I came to Ireland.
