It’s that slightly strange period between Christmas and New Year. This time last week people were buying last minute cards and wrapping paper. Today I saw those items on sale at half the price. I was hoping for fresh mushrooms but was not lucky.
A couple of weeks ago Octavia was telling me she has been trying to eat thirty different types of fruit and vegetables a week. She thought I probably already did. I was and remain more doubtful. I do eat a lot of fruit and veg, but I gravitate towards the same ones, so I have started noting my intake this week. I’m starting my list from Christmas Day. I haven’t totted things up before this minute, and I haven’t been trying to eat anything I don’t normally eat, so this list will be as much an eye opener for me as it is for you.:
raspberries (frozen to have with porridge)
satsumas
persimmon
walnuts
spinach
mushrooms
leafy greens
sweetheart cabbage
broccoli
leeks
red cabbage
onion
garlic
olives
tomatoes
tahini (does this count?)
brown rice (ditto)
tofu (ditto)
red pepper
cashew nuts
rocket
cucumber
celery
orange juice
grapes
spring onions.
I make that twenty-six. If porridge oats count it’s twenty-seven, and twenty -eight if I can include quorn cocktail sausages.
Unusually the list does not include any pulses or beans. That’ll change tomorrow, so it looks as though thirty is likely. I admit I’m surprised. I haven’t included gherkins, pickled peppers and capers although I have eaten those too. This is turning out to be a bit of a revelation.
Stay safe. Keep well. Eat your greens.
That looks like my shopping list for tomorrow’s visit to the produce market. I might make it to thirty if I count all the fresh herbs and spices. Beans and lentils ought to count. Chili too.
Still raining here (miracle of miracles) and I am snowed under with work. Waving a cheery good seasons wish in your general direction.
I had an email from Celia saying herbs count too so basil goes on the list. She didn’t mention spices, but I could add turmeric and ginger too if they are included. Also I forgot sprouts. Aubergines and courgettes on my to buy list today. Happy New Year. 🎄✨🎄
I will start making my “green” account and ser the outcome. This sounds inviting and interesting!
Happy New Year!!!
